Some remarks on the group variety \(N_ 2A\) (Q1074718)

In [\textit{R. Bieri}, \textit{R. Strebel}, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 41, 439-464 (1980; Zbl 0448.20029)] it is proved that every finitely presented group in the variety \({\mathfrak N}_ 2{\mathfrak A}\) of all (nilpotent of class 2)-by-Abelian groups satisfies Max-n. The author shows that this implies that the word problem for these groups is solvable. He also announces a joint result with N. Gupta, asserting that centre-by-(free-k-step soluble) groups, have, in general, insoluble word problem for \(k\geq 2\).
