The asymptotic integration of a second order differential equation (1) \((py')'+(f+g)y=0\) in \(I=[t_ 0,\infty [\) is treated. This is the problem of whether the solutions of (1) can be represented asymptotically as \(t\to \infty\) by the solutions of the unperturbed equation \((g=0\) in (1)). For this, the author presents several sufficient conditions involving a fundamental solution of the unperturbed equation. In this way, some previous results of \textit{W. A. Harris} and \textit{D. A. Lutz} [ibid. 51, 76-93 (1975; Zbl 0315.34070)], who treated the case \(p=f=1\), are generalized and improved, even in that special case. Moreover, the author proves conditions for the unperturbed equations \((py')'+fy=0\) to permit elementary asymptotic solution formulae.
