This note deals with the question of when a bounded linear mapping \(A: X\to Y\) (resp. \(A: X\to Y/H)\) between locally convex spaces has a bounded linear extension \(\bar A: Z\to Y\) with \(Z\supset X\) (resp. lifting \(\hat A: X\to Y)\). It is shown that a locally complete space E is an \({\mathcal F}_{\infty}\)- (resp. co-\({\mathcal F}_{\infty}\)-)space if and only if E admits extensions of bounded linear mappings having E as a domain (resp. range) space. The \({\mathcal F}_ p\)- (resp. co-\({\mathcal F}_ p\)-)spaces, \(1\leq p\leq \infty\), are the \({\mathcal A}\)- (resp. co-\({\mathcal A}\)-)spaces in the sense of A. Pietsch and H. Junek with respect to the operator ideal \({\mathcal A}={\mathcal F}_ p\) of all discretely p-factorable operators. Dually, a locally complete space E is an \({\mathcal F}_ 1\) (resp. co-\({\mathcal F}_ 1\)-)space if and only if every bounded linear mapping having E as domain (resp. range) space is liftable. There is also investigated the question of when a bounded linear mapping \(A: X\to Y\) (resp. \(A: X\to Y/H)\) has a bounded linear extenion \(\bar A: Z\to Y''_ n\) (resp. lifting A:X\(\to Y''_ n)\) where \(Y''_ n\) is the bidual of Y equipped with the natural topology. This question leads to the larger class of \({\mathcal L}_{\infty}\)- and co-\({\mathcal L}_{\infty}\)-spaces (resp. \({\mathcal L}_ 1\)- and co-\({\mathcal L}_ 1\)-spaces) where \({\mathcal A}={\mathcal L}_ p\), \(1\leq p\leq \infty\), denotes the operator ideal of all p-factorable operators. In the first section of this note there are given properties and examples of (co-)\(F_ p\)- and (co-)\({\mathcal L}_ p\)-spaces. In section 2 the extension and lifting theorem for bounded linear mappings between locally convex spaces is proven. In the last section this theorem is applied to continuous linear mappings, compact mappings, differentiable mappings between locally convex spaces and to mappings lying in a function space \({\mathcal F}(\Omega,E)\) which is isomorphic to the Schwartz \(\epsilon\)- product \({\mathcal F}(\Omega)\epsilon E\).
