A computer-aided design technique for two-dimensional (2-D) half-plane infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters is presented. The Fletcher nonlinear optimization algorithm is used to minimize the \(\ell_ p\) norm for various values of even p. Symmetry contraints are imposed on the structure of the transfer function (with nonseparable denominators) in order that the corresponding magnitude squared function possesses octagonal and approximately circular symmetry in the magnitude response. Two different structures of the transfer function are chosen for the design of 2-D low-pass and high-pass filters. Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are developed for both the transfer functions. These conditions are reduced to the simple check of a small number of predetermined inequalities, or by using the Schur-Cohn test. The resulted overall filter consists of terms of the transfer function used connected in cascade. The designed filters in the examples exhibit good frequency response characteristics and circular symmetry in spite of the fact that they consist of functions with only four free parameters. In a relevant conference paper [''Design of circularly symmetric and fan 2-D half-plane recursive digital filters based on octagonal and quadrantal symmetries'', Proc. Int. Conf. Digital Signal Process., 59-63 (Florence 1984)] the same design technique has been successfully used for the design of fan filters possessing quadrantal symmetry in the magnitude response.
