Let G be a complex semisimple Lie group, \(N\subset G\) be the cone of nilpotent elements, and W be the Weyl group of G. In his report at the Moscow Congress, \textit{R. Steinberg} [cf. Trudy mezhdunarod. Kongr. Mat., Moskva 1966, 277-284 (1968; Zbl 0192.362)] posed the problem: to find a natural action of W in the linear space V such that the orbit space V/W is isomorphic to N. It was shown by the reviewer that if G is a simple Lie algebra of type \(A_ 2\), then there exist no actions with these properties [Funct. Anal. Appl. 11, 70-71 (1977); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 11, No.1, 79-80 (1977; Zbl 0346.14017)]. In the paper under review it is shown that if G is an arbitrary simple Lie algebra, except \(A_ 1\), then the desired action does not exist.
