Let \(F\) be a field, \(\text{char}\, F\neq 2,3\), and \(V\) a variety of \(F\)-algebras \(A\) such that \(I^2\) is an ideal in \(A\) for any ideal \(I\) in \(A\). This property can be characterized by two identities of degree three [\textit{T. Anderson}, Math. Ann. 194, 27--34 (1971; Zbl 0212.05404)]. An algebra \(A\) in \(V\) is associator dependent if \(A\) satisfies an identity \(\sum_{s\in S_3}a_s(x_{s1},x_{s2},x_{s3})=0\), where \(a_s\in F\) and \(a_1=1\). Here \((x,y,z)=(xy)z-x(yz)\). It is shown that each algebra \(A\) in \(V\) is either associator dependent or the identities \[ (a+b-1)[[x_1,x_2], x_3]+(2a-b)((x_2,x_1,x_3)-(x_2,x_3,x_1))+ (x_1,x_2,x_3)-(x_3,x_1,x_2)=0; \] \[ (x_1,x_2,x_3)+(x_2,x_3,x_1)+(x_3,x_1,x_2)=0 \] hold either in \(A\) or in its opposite algebra.
