This paper is an algebraic investigation of finite G-CW complexes and their equivariant self-maps when G is a finite group. Part of the setup is as follows. Let \(CW_ 0^ G\) be the category of finite pointed G-CW complexes whose morphisms are the G-homotopy classes of pointed G-maps. \(End^ G_ 0\) is the associated endomorphism category: an object is a G-map \(f: X\to X\), and a morphism h: (f: \(X\to X)\to (g: Y\to Y)\) is a G- map from X to Y such that the obvious square commutes. The Grothendieck group \(K(End^ G_ 0)\), the object of analysis of this paper, is constructed from the isomorphism classes \(<X,f>\) of objects in \(End^ G_ 0\) by adding relations \(<X,f>=<A,f| A>+<X/A,f/A>\) whenever A is an f-invariant, pointed, G-subcomplex of X. Now the functor V: End\({}^ G_ 0\to CW^ G_ 0\) which forgets the endomorphisms induces a split surjection V: K(End\({}^ G_ 0)\to A(G)\), where A(G) is the Burnside ring of G-spaces defined and analyzed by Dress and tom Dieck. The idea of the paper is to analyze the kernel of V, \(\tilde K(\)End\({}^ G_ 0)\), by means of a general Lefschetz number taking its values in \(\tilde K(\)End M \({\mathbb{Z}}G)\), the reduced Grothendieck group of the endomorphism category of finitely generated \({\mathbb{Z}}G\)-modules. The formula is \(\tilde L<X,f>=\sum (-1)^ j<\tilde H^ j(X),f^*>\). In case G is abelian the images \(\tilde L<X,f>\) are determined by classical Lefschetz numbers, via a known algebraic description of the endomorphism category of projective R-modules.
