A well-known theorem of A. O. Asar states that a locally finite group is almost soluble if it contains an involution such that its centralizer is a Chernikov group. In this paper the structure of locally finite groups which contain an involution such that its centralizer is almost locally- soluble with minimum condition on 2-subgroups is determined (Satz A). In the second main result it is shown that in a locally finite group G which contains an element x of prime order such that the centralizer \(C_ G(x)\) is a Chernikov group, the factor group G/R(G), where R(G) is the Hirsch-Plotkin radical of G, is a Chernikov group (Satz B). This extends a result of B. Hartley for locally finite-soluble groups. It is conjectured that the group G here is always almost soluble, and this conjecture is verified in the case that \(C_ G(x)\) is finite (Folgerung B). The proofs depend on the fact that an infinite simple locally finite group with minimum condition on p-subgroups for the prime p, is a Chevalley group over an infinite locally finite field (V. Belyaev and V. Borovik, B. Hartley and G. Shute, S. Thomas). The author uses his previous study of the structure of centralizers of elements of prime order in a locally finite group of Chevalley type.
