A group G is called quasi-artinian if for every descending chain \(N_ 1\geq N_ 2\geq..\). of normal subgroups of G there exist two positive integers r, s such that \([G^{(r)},N_ s]\leq N_ n\) for every \(n\geq 1\). It is shown that the class of quasi-artinian groups is countably recognizable (Proposition 2.2) and that a subgroup with finite index in a quasi-artinian group is quasi-artinian under certain conditions (Proposition 2.3). Every residually central quasi-artinian group is soluble (Theorem 3.3) and every residually commutative quasi-artinian group is hyperabelian (Theorem 3.7). A quasi-artinian group G satisfies the minimum condition on normal subgroups if and only if for each normal subgroup N of G the factor group G/N satisfies the minimum condition on abelian normal subgroups (Theorem 4.2). Examples are given to show that the class of quasi-artinian groups is not extension inherited and not closed under the forming of normal subgroups.
