Let G be a connected, non-compact, semisimple Lie group with finite center and real rank one. Let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G and let \(\Gamma\) \(\subset G\) be a discrete, torsion-free, cocompact subgroup. Fix a finite-dimensional unitary representation T of \(\Gamma\), \(\chi\) its character. In the case of a compact Riemannian surface \(X=\Gamma \setminus SL(2,{\mathbb{R}})/SO(2)\) of genus \(\geq 2\) \textit{A. Selberg} [J. Indian Math. Soc., New Ser. 20, 47-87 (1956; Zbl 0072.082)] defined \(Z_{\Gamma}(s,\chi)\), a zeta function attached to the data (\(\Gamma\),\(\chi)\), such that the location and order of the zeros give information about the spectrum of the Laplace operator on X. Later Gangolli constructed a zeta function for G as above and studied its properties in the spherical case. In the present paper the author obtains similar results in a more general context. Let \((\tau,V_{\tau})\) be an irreducible unitary representation of K and let \(E_{\tau}=G\times_{\tau}V_{\tau}\), the associated vector bundle over G/K. If \(\nabla\) is a canonical connection on \(E_{\tau}\), let be \(D=-\nabla^ 2\), \(\nabla^ 2\) the connection Laplacian, and \(D_ T\) the induced differential operator on \(L^ 2(\Gamma \setminus E_{\tau},T)\). The author defines a Selberg-type zeta function \(Z_{\tau,T}(s)\) attached to the data (G,K,\(\Gamma\),T,\(\tau)\) which is holomorphic for Re s\(>1\). The author proves that \(Z_{\tau,T}(s)\) has a meromorphic continuation to \({\mathbb{C}}\), and the orders of zeros and poles are related to the multiplicities of the irreducible representations of G occurring in \(L^ 2(\Gamma \setminus G,T)\) (and to the spectrum of \(D_ T)\). The author also shows that \(Z_{\tau,T}(s)\) has an Euler product expansion and satisfies a functional equation. In a previous paper the author has studied the case when \(G=SU(n,1)\) [Hiroshima Math. J. 14 (1985), 597-618 (1984; Zbl 0559.10025)]. Also the case when \(G=SL(2,{\mathbb{C}})\) has been studied by \textit{D. Scott} [Math. Ann. 253, 177-194 (1980; Zbl 0449.22013)].
