The author calls a real number d a direction of a function \(f: R\to R\) at a point x if in every open interval containing x there are points a, b such that \(a<x<b\) and \([f(b)-f(a)]/(b-a)=d.\) He gives some necessary and/or sufficient conditions that f is differentiable at x, based on existence or uniqueness of a direction at x, under some assumptions on f, for instance strictly convexity of f.
