The notion of cyclic object in a category is analogous to the notion of simplicial object: the category \(\Delta\) of totally ordered finite sets is replaced by a small category \(\Lambda\) containing \(\Delta\) and all cyclic finite groups [see \textit{A. Connes}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 296, 953-958 (1983; Zbl 0534.18009)]. Here is defined a ''duplicial indexing'' category, extension of \(\Delta\) and from which \(\Lambda\) is obtained by the addition of certain cyclic relations. A duplicial module is a simplicial module X with extra degeneracy maps \(s_{n+1}: X_ n\to X_{n+1}\) satisfying usual identities except \(d_ 0s_{n+1}=s_ nd_ 0: X_ n\to X_ n\). A cyclic module is just a duplicial module with addition of the cyclic relations \((d_ 0s_{n+1})^{n+1}=id: X_ n\to X_ n.\) As in the simplicial case, one has a normalization and it results an equivalence between the category of duplicial modules and the category of duchain complexes which are \(X_ 0\rightleftarrows^{\delta}_{d}X_ 1\rightleftarrows^{\delta}_{d}X_ 2..\). with only \(d^ 2=0\) and \(\delta^ 2=0\). Then a simple characterization is given of a full subcategory of duchain complexes equivalent, under normalization, to the category of cyclic modules. Considering both underlying simplicial and cosimplicial structures, the homotopical aspect of duplicial modules and duchain complexes is investigated. One has an equivalence with a more familiar homotopy theory of maps of differentially graded modules. The paper ends in precising the sense given to homotopy theory and equivalence between such theories.
