It is well known that a finitely generated free (or free abelian) group can have at most countably many non-isomorphic subgroups. In this incisive note the authors remark that a (f.g.) one-relator group can have continuously many non-isomorphic subgroups. An example is \(<a,b,c: ab=ba^ 2>\), which is typical of the pattern of the main lemma: if \(G\) is a group possessing a countable infinity of non-isomorphic, freely indecomposable subgroups, then the free product of \(G\) with an infinite cyclic group contains continuously many non-isomorphic subgroups.
