The aim of this paper is an intrinsic study of the Moyal product in the space \({\mathbb{R}}^{2n}\). The Moyal product is defined here with the twisted convolution [\textit{D. Kastler}, Commun. Math. Phys. 1, 14-18 (1965; Zbl 0137.456)]. The extension of the Moyal product to the Fourier transforms of distributions with compact support gives the well-known formal definition [\textit{F. Bayen, M. Flato, C. Fronsdal, A. Lichnerowicz} and \textit{D. Sternheimer}, Ann. Phys. 111, 61-151 (1978; Zbl 0377.53024 and Zbl 0377.53025)]. The set \({\mathcal O}_ M^{\nu}\) of star-multiplication operators in \({\mathcal S}({\mathbb{R}}^{2n})\) is an algebra [\textit{M. A. Antonets}, Lett. Math. Phys. 2, 241-245 (1978)]; the space \({\mathcal S}'({\mathbb{R}}^{2n})\) is a right-module on \({\mathcal O}_ M^{\nu}\). The study of this space proves: under suitable assumptions, the formal definition gives a pth approximation of the Moyal product and \({\mathcal O}_ M^{\nu}\) is isomorphic to \({\mathcal S}({\mathbb{R}}^ n){\hat \otimes}{\mathcal S}'({\mathbb{R}}^ n).\) The set \(\beta^{\nu}\) of star-multiplication operators in \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^{2n})\) is an algebra [\textit{J.-M. Maillard}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Ser. I 298, 35-38 (1984; Zbl 0563.43006)]. It is defined here as the space of tempered distributions, the image of which is the set of bounded operators in \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) by the Weyl map. This space is isomorphic to the dual of \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^{2n})*_{\nu}L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^{2n})\) [\textit{J.-B. Kammerer}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I. 295, 317-320 (1982; Zbl 0509.46042)]. The necessary results are collected to define projections, resolvent,... and to prove the spectral resolution of the real or unitary elements of \({\mathcal B}^{\nu}\) and the real elements of \({\mathcal O}_ M^{\nu}\). In this paper a superfluous hypothesis has been made [\textit{J.-B. Kammerer}, J. Math. Phys. 27, 529 (1986)].
