Let \({\mathcal A}=C_ 0(x)\) be an abelian \(C^*\)-algebra, and let \(\delta_ 0\) be the generator of a strongly continuous group of *- automorphisms on \({\mathcal A}\). Derivations of the form \(\delta =\lambda \delta_ 0\) are considered, where \(\lambda\) is a multiplication operator on \(C_ 0(x)\). If \(\omega\in X\), let \(\nu\) (\(\omega)\) be the frequency of the orbit through \(\omega\) defined by the \(\delta_ 0\)-dynamics. If X is a real continuous function on \(X\setminus X_ 0\), where \(X_ 0\) is the set of fixed points for the \(\delta_ 0\)-dynamics, and satisfies bounds of the type \(| \lambda (S_ t\omega)-\lambda (\omega)| \leq K(\nu (\omega))| t|\), where \(K: {\mathbb{R}}_ t\to {\mathbb{R}}_ t\) is a function which is bounded on bounded intervals, and there exists an \(\epsilon >0\) for each compact subset \(C\subseteq X\) such that \(\lambda\) is uniformly bounded on \(C\cap \{\omega \in X;\nu (\omega)<\epsilon \}\), then \(\delta =\lambda \delta_ 0\) is densely defined and has a unique extension to a generator of a strongly continuous one-parameter group of *-automorphisms of \({\mathcal A}\). In particular, any derivation mapping \({\mathcal A}_{\infty}=\cap_{n\geq 1}D(\delta^ n_ 0)\) into \({\mathcal A}\) defines a function \(\lambda\) such that \(\delta =\lambda \delta_ 0\) on \({\mathcal A}_{\infty}\), and if \(\delta\) maps into \({\mathcal A}_ 1=D(\delta_ 0)\), the theorem applies, and, moreover, in this case the generator extension of \(\delta\) is equal to the closure of \(\delta\). The last result has since been extended to derivations mapping into Lipschitz continuous elements, see \textit{D. W. Robinson} [Smooth derivations on abelian \(C^*\)-dynamical systems, J. Austral. Math. Soc., Series A, to appear], and the result has been extended to a more abstract Banach space setting, see \textit{D. W. Robinson} [Commutators and generators II, Quart. J. Math., submitted or, Differential operators on \(C^*\)-algebras, in ''Operator Algebras and Mathematical Physics'', (eds. P.E.T. Jørgensen and P. Muhly) Contemp. Math. 60, AMS, Providence (1986)].
