A locally convex space E is called generalized Hilbert space ((gH)-space) if the \(\epsilon\)-topology and the \(w_ 2\)-topology coincide on the tensor product \(E\otimes F\) for every locally convex space f, where \(w_ 2\) denotes a tensor norm, introduced by J. S. Cohen. The theory of (gH)- spaces is developed in this paper with the technique of A. Grothendieck used in his work on nuclear spaces. In {\S} 1 there are given basic properties and various characterizations of (gH)-spaces. It is shown, among others, that the (gH)-spaces are precisely the locally convex spaces whose topology can be defined by a family of Hilbertian semi- norms. In {\S} 2 there are introduced the quasi absolutely 2-summable sequences in a locally convex space. These sequences form linear spaces which are locally convex spaces under natural topologies. It is shown that a locally convex space E is a (gH)-space if and only if the space of all quasi absolutely 2-summable sequences is topologically isomorphic to the space of all absolutely 2-summable sequences. From this one obtains a sequence characterization of Banach spaces which are isomorphic to Hilbert spaces. In {\S} 3 there are given additional characterizations of (gH)-spaces by means of particular operator ideals.
