The following result of Haydon is well known: the class of Dugundji spaces coincides with the class of all compact absolute extensors for zero-dimensional compact spaces (briefly, AE(0)-spaces). Dranishnikov proved that a compact X is an AE(0)-space iff for every embedding of X in a Tikhonov cube \(I^{\tau}\) there exists an upper semi-continuous compact-valued (usco) mapping r from \(I^{\tau}\) to X such that \(r(x)=x\), for each \(x\in X\) (such an usco mapping is called an usco retraction). Recently Chigogidze extended the notion of AE(0) from the class of compact spaces to that of completely regular spaces. In the present paper a completely regular space X is shown to be an AE(0)-space iff X is an usco retract of \(R^{\tau}\) for some \(\tau\), where R is the real line. We also prove the following results: (1) X is an absolute neighbourhood extensor for 0-dimensional spaces iff X is open in its Hewitt real compactification yX and yX\(\in AE(0)\); (2) Every pinnate (in the sense of Arkhangel'skij) absolute neighbourhood extensor for 0- dimensional spaces is Lindelöf and Čech-complete. Some unsolved problems are given.
