The starting point of this paper is a result of \textit{N. Kerzman} [Math. Ann. 195, 149-158 (1972; Zbl 0221.32012)] stating that the Bergman kernel function of a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) extends smoothly to \(\partial \Omega \times \partial \Omega -\{(z,z): z\in \partial \Omega \}\) provided certain strong pseudo-local estimates hold for the Bergman projector. These strong estimates are at present known to hold only in smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains of finite type in the sense of \textit{J. P. D'Angelo} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 115, 615-637 (1982; Zbl 0488.32008)] and \textit{D. Catlin} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 120, 529-586 (1984; Zbl 0583.32048)]. In this paper, the author studies the precise relationship between pseudo-locality of the Bergman projector and the differentiability of the Bergman kernel function, and in so doing he also provides some extensions of Kerzman's result. Similar results have been also obtained independently by \textit{H. P. Boas} [''Extension of Kerzman's theorem on differentiability of the Bergman kernel function'', preprint]. The method of proof is based on a construction of local approximating domains of finite type. This construction has been also used by \textit{E. Amar} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 29, 127-140 (1984; Zbl 0583.32033)] and by \textit{R. Gay} and \textit{A. Sebbar} [Math. Z. 189, 421-447 (1985; Zbl 0547.32009)].
