The main result is: If the automorphism group of a locally compact 4- dimensional stable plane has dimension at least 5 and contains a subgroup \(\Phi =SO_ 3\), then the plane is the complex projective plane \(P_ 2{\mathbb{C}}\) or the open subplane obtained from it by removing the points of either a conic section (''complex oval plane'') or the real projective plane.
