This paper provides a diffeomorphism classification of all closed oriented four dimensional manifolds which have an effective action of a compact (connected ?) non-abelian Lie group. In addition, the paper contains an equivariant classification of SU(2) and SO(3) actions on four dimensional manifolds. These are the crucial groups for the problem.
