Let (u,\(\theta)\) denote a solution of one-dimensional isotropic homogeneous coupled dynamic thermoelasticity on the closed half-strip: \(t\geq 0\) and \(0\leq x\leq 1\), subject to the boundary conditions: \(u(0,t)=v(0,t),\quad u(1,t)=v(1,t),\quad \theta (0,t)=A+Bt,\quad \theta (1,t)=0\), where \(v=v(x,t)\) is a solution of the wave equation: \(v_{xx}- v_{tt}=0\) for (x,t)\(\in [0,1]\times [0,\infty)\), and \(A,B>0\) are constants. The author proves that if the total energy associated with \(v_ t\) remains bounded as \(t\to +\infty\), then there is a finite T such that the ''moving averages'' of u and v satisfy the inequalities \[ (1/2)\quad \int^{t+1}_{t-1}u(x,s)ds>(1/2)\int^{t+1}_{t-1}v(x,s)ds \] \[ \int^{t+1}_{t-1}u(x,s)ds>\int^{t+1-x}_{t- 1+x}u(0,s)ds+\int^{t+x}_{\quad t-x}u(1,s)ds \] for every \(t>T+1\) and every x in \(0<x<1\). The proof is based on the fact that under the above hypothesis the temperature gradient is negative for every \(t>T\) and \(x\in [0,1]\), and on suitable combination of the field eqs. met by u,\(\theta\) and v.
