A module over some ring is called \(\Sigma\)-pure-injective if every direct sum of copies of it is pure-injective \((=algebraically\) compact). The study of this type of modules has been initiated by \textit{L. Gruson} and \textit{C. U. Jensen} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 282, 23-24 (1976; Zbl 0341.18010)] and, independently, by the reviewer [Commun. Algebra 5, 1083-1117 (1977; Zbl 0371.16012)]. According to the latter paper each \(\Sigma\)-pure-injective module is a direct sum of indecomposable submodules. In the present article it is shown that over a valuation domain R such a decomposition has only finitely many non-isomorphic summands and that each of these is isomorphic to one of the following modules: \(Q=Quot(R)\), \(R_ I/I\), \(R_{I'}/R_ I\), \(R_ I/p^ kR_ I\), where I is a prime ideal \(\neq 0\) of R and in the last two cases \(I=pR_ I\) for some \(p\in R\) and \(I'=\cap^{\infty}_{n=1}I^ n\). As a byproduct the author obtains the structure of the \(\Sigma\)-injective and the artinian R- modules.
