This note concerns scattering of a quantum mechanical particle by a long range potential. The Hamiltonians are \(H_ 0=-\Delta\) and \(H=H_ 0+V\) where V is a long range potential of the type introduced by L. Hörmander (plus a short range term). The two Hilbert space wave operators \[ (*)\quad \Omega^{\pm}(J)\phi =\lim_{t\to \mp \infty}e^{itH}Je^{-itH_ 0}\phi \quad for\quad all\quad \phi \in L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ n) \] are shown to exist and be complete for some bounded operator J. \((\Omega^{\pm}(J)\) equal the usual Dollard modified wave operators.) The proof, which is only outlined, is given in two steps. The first step is to prove an abstract completeness result in two Hilbert spaces by Enss' time dependent method. The main hypothesis of this abstract result is the existence of two bounded operators \(J^{\pm}\) such that \((HJ^{\pm}-J^{\pm}H_ 0)P^{\pm}\) are short range where \(P^+\) (respectively \(P^-)\) are, roughly, projections onto the incoming (resp. outgoing) states of \(H_ 0\). The second step of the proof involves constructing \(J^{\pm}\) (and thereby J) and requires a solution of an eikonal equation constructed by Isozaki and Kitada. (Equation (1.1) in the paper is incorrect; it should be replaced by (*) above.)
