The authors examine the problem of the propagation of acceleration waves in elastic membranes of arbitrary material symmetry, the only requirements being the frame-indifference and the smoothness of the response functions. Once the general form of these response functions is so formulated, conditions of compatibility associated with the motion of a membrane carrying an acceleration wave are established. Propagation conditions of various acceleration waves are derived. Amplitude equations for tangential and transverse waves are also given. To avoid any confusion in the necessary complicated component formulas, the analysis is mostly presented in component forms in a specific convected system. An alternative formulation of acceleration waves based on a system of partial differential equations is also given.
