We show that Shephard's duality theorem follows from the manner in which boundary points of closed, convex, monotonic sets are supported with hyperplanes separating the origin. Either a point on the boundary of a level set can be supported directly by a hyperplane which separates the origin from the set, or it can be supported in the limit by such hyperplanes. If a point cannot be scaled to put it on the boundary, then supporting hyperplanes exist which separate the origin from the set and whose normals are in the limit orthogonal to the point. And, this is the essence of the dual characterization of production technologies.
