Let G be a finite group and k a field of characteristic \(p>0\). A kG- module is called symmetric if it admits a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form invariant under G. The group ring kG is said to be of unbounded symmetric representation type if k is infinite and there are infinitely many symmetric indecomposable kG-modules of dimension d, for arbitrarily large d, or if k is finite and there are symmetric indecomposable kG-modules of arbitrarily large finite dimension. It is shown that if a p-Sylow subgroup of G is noncyclic, then kG is of unbounded symmetric representation type. A similar result can be shown for antisymmetric representation type in certain cases, but some questions about this situation remain unresolved.
