The author considers polynomials f(z) for which the coefficients are positive and form a unimodal sequence. He determines conditions on the coefficients which guarantee that all zeros of f(z) lie in the closed unit disc \(| z| \leq 1\), thus generalizing the well-known Eneström-Kakeya theorem which deals with the case in which the coefficient sequence is decreasing. For example, his theorem shows that the zeros of \(az^ n+nz^{n-1}+...+3z^ 2+2z+1\) lie in the closed unit disc if \(n\geq 6\) and \(a\geq n/2+1\), whereas the Eneström-Kakeya theorem would require \(a\geq n\).
