Let R denote an arbitrary open Riemann surface and \(\Gamma =\Gamma (R)\) the Hilbert space of square integrable complex differentials. \(\Gamma_ x\subset \Gamma_ h\) is called a behavior space if \(\Gamma_ h=\Gamma_ x\oplus \Gamma^*_ x\), and a meromorphic differential \(\psi\) is said to have \(\Gamma_ x\)-behavior if there exists a compact set \(K\subset R\) such that \(\psi =w+w_ 0\) on R-K, where \(w\in \Gamma_ x\), \(w_ 0\in \Gamma_{eo}\). A meromorphic function f is said to have \(\Gamma_ x\)-behavior if df has \(\Gamma_ x\)-behavior. With these differentials and functions the author proves the Riemann-Roch and Abel theorems on R. For the application of these theorems he considers symmetric behavior spaces on symmetric Riemann surfaces. The main contrast with the former behavior spaces introduced by others is that there is no period condition on \(\Gamma_ x\).
