The author gives an extension of the convergent approximation process on the positive real axis that uses a Bernstein-type discrete linear operator, to a process on the entire real axis. The operator associates with a function a rational function in which the denominator does not carry information on f: it is of the form \((1+a_ nx)^ n+(1-a_ nx)^ n\) with most of the times \(a_ n=n^{p-1}\) \((0<p<1)\); the numerator carries the information on f taken at the points \(k/n^ p\) \((k=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,...,\pm n)\). Both numerator and denominator have even degree. The paper contains several interesting theorems connecting the rate of convergence and the modulus of continuity, together with the ''modulus of continuity at infinity''.
