The author proves that if in an algebraic lattice L all compact elements have complements, then the g.l.b. of all dual atoms in L is zero. A corollary: If, moreover, L is the congruence lattice of an algebra \({\mathfrak A}\), then \({\mathfrak A}\) is isomorphic to a subdirect product of simple algebras. Some other consequences are also presented.
