Let \(J^ r_ a(X)\) denote the image in the intermediate Jacobian \(J^ r(X)\) under the Abel-Jacobi map of the codimension-r cycles on X algebraically equivalent to zero. Here X is a nonsingular hypersurface of dimension n and degree m in projective space \({\mathbb{P}}^{n+1}({\mathbb{C}})\). A theorem of Griffiths asserts that if X is generic, \(n=2r-1\), and \(m\geq 2+3/(r-1)\), then \(J^ r_ a(X)=0\). The main result in the present paper is the construction of explicit examples of hypersurfaces X, defined over \({\mathbb{Q}}\), such that \(J^ r_ a(X)=0\). The smallest example is for \(n=3\) and \(m=6\).
