Let f be a conformal mapping of the unit disc B onto a simply connected proper subdomain D of the complex plane. The authors characterize Hölder continuity of f and \(f^{-1}\) in terms of the extremal length of certain families of crosscuts of the domain. These conformally invariant characterizations are then applied to various Euclidean geometric conditions. These include separation properties, where the diameter of crosscuts of D connecting boundary points of D are compared to the distance between the points, and wedge conditions for Jordan domains, where each boundary point is at the vertex of a wedge of fixed size and shape \(\bar D\) or \({\mathbb{C}}-D\). Most of the Hölder exponents which are obtained are best possible in terms of hypotheses.
