Let X be a Banach space, A:D(A)\(\to X\) a closed operator. We say the abstract differential equation \[ (*)\quad \frac{d}{dt}x-Ax=f \] is of type p, if for each \(f\in L^ p({\mathbb{R}},X)\) there is a unique solution \(x\in L^ p({\mathbb{R}},X)\) such that \(\frac{d}{dt}x\) lies in \(L^ p({\mathbb{R}},X)\) as well. Using singular integral equation methods we prove the following results: (1) if X is reflexive and if (*) is of type q, then (*) is of type p for all \(p\in (1,\infty),\) (2) if X is a Hilbert space, then the resolvent estimate \(\| (A- is)^{-1}\| <\frac{C}{1+| s|}\), \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}\), is necessary and sufficient for (*) being of type p for some \(p\in (1,\infty).\) Applications to parabolic and elliptic equations are given.
