I construct a Riemann surface R with the following two properties: (1) any distinct pair of points of R are separated by bounded analytic functions on R; (2) the natural inclusion map \(\tau\) of R into the maximal ideal space of the algebra of bounded analytic functions on R is not open. I also give several equivalent conditions in local forms in order that the map \(\tau\) is open in a neighborhood of a given point of R. One of the conditions is related to the existence of a meromorphic function on R bounded off a compact set.
