Let X be a Stein manifold and \(D\subset X\) an open (connected) domain in X. The cohomology groups \(H^ q(D,{\mathcal O})\), \(q\geq 0\), carry a natural structure of a topological vector space. The author studies relations between the following properties of D: 1) \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal O})\) is Hausdorff, 2) D is Stein, and 3) D has an envelope of holomorphy contained in X. Among the results proved are the following. Theorem 1: D is Stein if and only if \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal O})\) is Hausdorff and for each one-dimensional closed subspace I of X with \(I\cap D\neq \emptyset\) the topology of \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal F}_ I)\) is the trivial one, where \({\mathcal F}_ I\) is the ideal sheaf of I. Theorem 2: Suppose dim X\(=2\); then D is Stein if and only if \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal O})\) is Hausdorff and X-D does not have any compact connected components. Theorem 3: Denote by \(\Omega^ 2\) the sheaf of germs of holomorphic 2-forms on X and by \(D^ 1\) the complement of the union of the noncompact components of X-D. Suppose dim X\(=2\). Then \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal O})\) is Hausdorff if and only if \(D^ 1\) is Stein and for every compact component L of X-D one has \(H^ 1(L,\Omega^ 2)=\lim_{\to} H^ 1(U,\Omega^ 2)=0\), where the direct limit is taken over open neighborhoods U of L.
