Let M, M' be complex manifolds of dimension n and denote by \(T^*M\), \(T^*M'\) their holomorphic cotangent bundles. Assuming the existence of a symplectic biholomorphism \(\phi\) : \(T^*M\to T^*M'\), the author associates to each real value function \(u\in C^ 1(M)\) a real valued function u'\(\in C(M')\), in such a way that if u satisfies the homogeneous complex Monge-Ampère equation (\({\bar \partial}\partial u)^ n=0\), the same holds for u' (that is, the author constructs a symmetry for the complex Monge-Ampère equation). Examples are presented. As an application the following exterior Dirichlet problem is studied. Let D be a bounded strictly convex domain in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) with analytic boundary \(\partial D\). The author shows that there exists a unique real- analytic function \(U: {\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus D\to {\mathbb{R}}\) with the following properties: U is plurisubharmonic in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus \bar D\), (\({\bar \partial}\partial u)^ n=0\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus \bar D\), \(U(z)=\log | z| +O(1)\) as \(| z| \to \infty\), \(U(z)=0\) if \(z\in \partial D\). Extensions of this result when the strict convexity condition is relaxed, and also for the inhomogeneous Dirichlet problem, are also mentioned.
