A modified Szász-Mirakyan operator \(S_{n,N}\) is defined as \[ S_{n,N}(f;x):=e^{-nx}\sum^{N}_{k=0}(nk)^ kf(kn^{-1})(k!)^{- 1} \] for various choices of N. If \(f\in C[0,+\infty)\) is exponentially bounded, the author shows that \((N-nx)n^{-1/2}\to C\) (n\(\to \infty)\) where \(-\infty \leq C\leq +\infty\) implies \(S_{n,N}(f;x)\to f(x)\Phi (Cx^{-1/2})\) (n\(\to \infty)\) where \(\Phi\) denotes the standard normal distribution function. Also rates of convergence are considered. If e.g. f'(x) is finite and if \(N=+\infty\) or \(N=nx+o(n^{-1/2})\) and \(N-nx>an^{1/2}\log (n)\) \((a>0)\), then \(S_{n,N}(f;x)=f(x)+o(n^{-1/2})\) (n\(\to \infty)\). The proofs of the results depend on the probabilistic interpretation of the operators \(S_{n,N}\).
