A real nonnegative \(n\times n\) matrix is doubly substochastic (doubly stochastic) if the row and column sums are at most one (equal to one), or substochstic (stochastic) if the row sums are at most one (equal to one). Let each of A and B be \(n\times n\) substochastic (doubly substochastic). Necessary conditions are given so that each of the systems \(AX=B\), \(BY=A\) and \(XA=B\), \(YB=A\) are consistent, where X, Y are substochastic (doubly substochastic). Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a substochastic (doubly substochastic) matrix to be idempotent.
