We have attempted to place the parabolic Navier-Stokes (PNS) method on a more sound theoretical basis by examining the fundamental assumptions of the method, and by demonstrating its compatibility with the triple-deck theory of Stewartson. The analysis and examples have shown that stable marching of the PNS equations for supersonic compressible flow is related to the filtering of the eigensolutions to the sublayer (lower deck) found in triple-deck theory. If allowed to, the PNS equations correctly capture the known features of so-called departure solutions corresponding to a longitudinal compression or expansion wave. By use of an appropriate filter on the pressure term in the x-momentum equation, the departure can be suppressed, giving the usual desired weak interaction solution. A correct manipulation of the pressure term along with a global iteration process can allow one to correctly compute strongly interacting and separated flows as well.
