Starting from the equations of balance of mass, momentum and energy of each constituent, the corresponding balance equations of the mixture are obtained. Constitutive equations for the reaction rate densities, interaction forces, heat flux and stress of each component are studied from the thermodynamic point of view. After application of the restrictions of material frame-indifference, the second-law restrictions are analyzed. The entropy inequality is formulated without taking an a priori expression for the entropy nor the entropy flux, which will be determined a posteriori by the theory [the author, Thermodynamics, Pitman, London (1985)]. The restrictions imposed by the balance equations are taken into acount by means of Lagrange multipliers [\textit{I.-S. Liu}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 46, 131-148 (1972; Zbl 0252.76003)]. In this framework, the paper shows rather explicitly to what extent the constitutive equations can be restricted, and which coefficients must be determined from experiment or microscopic theories. The paper ends with an explicit calculation of a stationary process of a binary reacting and diffusive mixture between two infinite parallel plates.
