Recall that an element x of the unit sphere of a Banach space X is a strongly extreme point of the unit ball if and only if for every \(\epsilon >0\) there exists \(\delta >0\) such that the conditions \(\| x\pm z\| <1+\delta\) imply \(\| z\| <\epsilon\). In this paper, the problem of characterizing strongly extreme points in the Lebesgue-Bochner space \(L^ p(\mu,X)\) is considered. It is shown that f is a strongly extreme point of the unit ball of \(L^ p(\mu,X)\) if \(\| f\|_ p=1\) and, for almost all s in the support of f, the element \(f(s)/\| f(s)\|\) is a strongly extreme point of the unit ball of X. It is also shown that these same natural conditions are necessary for f to be a strongly extreme point in \(L^ p(\mu,X)\) in the case that X is separable or in the setting that \(\mu\) is a Radon measure on a locally compact Hausdorff space. These results are compared to the then known results for extreme points and strongly exposed points in \(L^ p(\mu,X)\). Following the acceptance of this paper in 1983, \textit{Peter Greim} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 93, 65-66 (1985; Zbl 0524.46022)] removed the restriction on X or \(\mu\) given above and established the necessity in the general setting. For a complete survey of these and related results the reader is referred to the more recent paper of the author on rotundity and extremity in \(\ell^ p(X_ i)\) and \(L^ p(\mu,X)\) [Contemp. Math. 52, 143-162 (1986; review above)].
