Using the classification of finite linear spaces admitting a 2- homogeneous automorphism group [\textit{W. M. Kantor}, J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 38, 66-74 (1985; Zbl 0559.05015)] the author shows: Let S be a finite linear space having a proper linear subspace and a line of size \(>2\) or a non-empty family of planes such that any three non-collinear points are contained in exactly one plane. S has an automorphism group \(\Gamma\) which is transitive on the unordered pairs of intersecting lines if and only if S is a projective or affine space of dimension \(\geq 3\) or some Steiner system S(3,k,v). In the first case \(\Gamma\) contains the belonging special linear group, in the second case all lines have size 2.
