The real behaviour of digital filters is mainly influenced by two nonlinear effects: overflow nonlinearity (F) and quantization nonlinearity (Q). All the investigations are concerned with the most encountered structure, i.e. second-order recursive direct-form (SORDF). The main problem is to know when a SORDF has zero-input stability (ZIS). It is customary to consider separately F and Q effects. The present paper gives an important answer: when Q and F effects can be treated separately. Some examples given in the paper show clearly that ZIS for a SORDF attained in the presence of F effect solely can be lost when Q effect is taken into account. Three theorems for ZIS with both F and Q effects are given (without proof) and an algorithm to determine the minimum wordlength is presented. Results stemming from a computer simulation show an extreme important conclusion: ZIS can be investigated in the presence of F effect solely independent of the quantization technique if the wordlength is of 16 bits. Therefore, we conclude that the paper represents a basic contribution to the theory of SORDF. Finally, we would mention another paper treating the dual problem, i.e. ZIS in the presence of Q effect solely [see \textit{A. Lepschy}, \textit{G. A. Mian} and \textit{U. Viaro}, Analysis and optimization of systems, Proc. 7th Int. Conf., Antibes/France 1986, Lect. Notes Control Inf. Sci. 83, 617- 629 (1986)].
