The purpose of this paper is to introduce a notion of equivariant (local) index in order to describe the behavior of tangent G-vector fields on smooth G-manifolds M near isolated singularities where G is a finite group. The indices are members of the monoid of equivariant homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit sphere S(V), where V is the tangent representation of M at the singularity under consideration. The reviewer wishes to point out that \textit{H. Hauschild} [unpublished paper, Göttingen, 1974] has studied the global setting of this problem for G a compact Lie group, and he has defined a (global) index of a tangent G-vector field on a compact G-manifold with finitely many singular orbits. This index resides in the stable G-homotopy group of spheres (or equivalently in the Burnside ring of G), and is locally (and essentially) the same as in the paper under review.
