Approximate solution of the Riemann problem for the Burgers equation by the transversal method of lines (Q1083179)

This paper deals with the Riemann (Cauchy) problem for the Burgers equation. More specially, under the transversal method of lines the equation is discretized with respect to time and the time derivative is replaced by backward difference quotients. It is shown in the case of shock waves that no continuous solutions exist and it is defined a discontinuous solution in such a way that the approximation problem turns out to be a convenient approximation to the Cauchy problem under consideration.
