We consider cusp forms for the Hilbert modular group of a cyclic extension K, which are eigenfunctions of the differential operators on the associated symmetric space. One family of such can be obtained using base change liftings. As is well known, these are all invariant with respect to the action of the Galois group of K on forms. The main result of this paper is that there exist infinitely many independent cusp forms which are not Galois invariant. The main ingredient in the proof is the use of the spectral decomposition of the space of square integrable functions on the fundamental domain, and the analysis of the action of the Galois group on its various components.
