Let G be a group. Suppose that for all a,b\(\in G\) there exists an element \(c\in G\) such that (I) \((b,(a,g))=(c,g)\) for all \(g\in G\), (II) \(((g,a),b)=(g,c)\) for all \(g\in G\). G is said to have right commutator closure if (I) holds, but left commutator closure if (II) holds. The author shows that the study of commutator closed groups has a natural embedding in the theory of automorphism groups. For this purpose he considers subgroups X of Aut G and defines commutator closure for the action of X on G. He then obtains theorems for subgroups X of Aut G and subgroups \(H\subseteq G\) such that the action of X on H is commutator closed. These theorems contain known results on commutator closed groups. We note that this paper makes heavy use of ring theory and establishes a close connection between commutator closure and quasi-regularity of rings.
