Let F be a holomorphic mapping from the unit ball \(B_ n\subset {\mathbb{C}}^ n\) into the unit ball \(B_ m\subset {\mathbb{C}}^ m\), \(J_ F(z)\) the Jacobian matrix of F at z, \(\lambda_ F(z)\) the non-negative square root of the smallest eigenvalue of \(J_ F(z)^*J_ F(z)\) and \({\mathcal F}(n,m,\lambda)\) the class of holomorphic mappings \(F: B_ n\to B_ m\) such that \(F(0)=0\), \(\lambda_ F(0)=\lambda\) \((0<\lambda <1)\), where \({\mathcal F}(n,n,\lambda)={\mathcal F}(n,\lambda)\). For every \(F\in {\mathcal F}(n,\lambda)\), let be \(r(F)=\sup \{r>0\); there exists a domain \(\Omega\), \(0\in \Omega \subset B_ n\) such that F maps \(\Omega\) univalently onto \(rB_ n\}\), where \(rB_ n=\{rz; z\in B_ n\}\) and \(L(n,\lambda)=\inf \{r(F); F\in {\mathcal F}(n,\lambda)\}\). The author establishes that if \(F\in {\mathcal F}(n,\lambda)\) and \(0<r< \rho_{\lambda}=\lambda /(1+\sqrt{1- \lambda^ 2})\), then there is a domain \(\Omega\), \(0\in \Omega \subset rB_ n\), such that \(\Omega\) is mapped by F univalently onto \(\tau (r)B_ n\), where \(\tau (r)=r(\lambda -r)/(1-\lambda r)\) and \(L(n,\lambda)=\rho_{\lambda}\). [This relation was obtained in the case \(n=1\) by \textit{M. Heins}, Selected topics in the classical theory of functions of a complex variable, Holt (1962; Zbl 1226.30001).] A similar result is obtained when \(F\in {\mathcal F}(n,m,\lambda)\) \((n<m)\).
