This paper deals with a free boundary value problem arising in electro- chemical machining. The metal to be shaped is the anode and the electrostatic potential set up between it and the cathode causes the metal of the anode to be worn away at a rate proportional to the current density which in turn depends on the electrostatic field. The mathematical problem is formulated and analysed in special cases.
