Let Y be a Hausdorff topological linear space, \(C\subset Y\) a convex cone and \(\emptyset \neq B\subset Y\); let \(E_ C(B)=\{x\in B| b\in B\), b- x\(\in C\Rightarrow x-b\in C\}\). The main result of the paper states that \(E_ C(B)\) is nonempty if B is compact and C has property (*): For every closed subspace L of lin \(\bar C,\) if \(\overline{C\cap L}\) is a linear subspace then so is \(C\cap L\). The proof is made using transfinite induction. It is also shown that condition (*) is also necessary if Y is pseudometrizable. The theorem contains as special cases many existence results for maximal points.
